YOU ARE AN ARTIST

We welcome you to explore "This Building Has A Story" in the project room at INVENTONSITE, an amazing exhibition of BRIC Contemporary Art Education artist student work, curated by Hawley Hussey Director of Education.
Upon your departure we wish you many happy days of observing, searching and finding little treasures.
You are an artist.
Join us at the opening...
The imagined and actual stories of this abandoned building in Willamsburg, Brooklyn
are revealed!

A brilliant cryptic shrine poem!

CLASSROOM INSTALL OF SHRINES: Student Artist components

SHRINES

During our final class, these amazing students/artists/thinkers composed shrines that are non-linear narratives about what they imagined inside the abandoned building and...what Nathan revealed to them as the actuality of the interior. Many Thanks to Bill Brovold who built these gorgeous boxes and to Maggy Rozycki Hiltner for found object contributions!

BEAUTIFUL BOXES: Bill Brovold's components

Meanwhile...we all started thinking about how to best respresent our students' work and this amazing adventure in the project room. Bill Brovold, a painter,
musician http://atomicumbrella.blogspot.com/2007/09/interview-with-bill-brovold-of-larval.html master carpenter and artist teacher came on board to add to our vision by constructing beautiful boxes for our students' imagined shrines and guiding us for many other creative components of the install. Revealed at the exhibition!

REARRANGING POE AND SCULPTING: Student Artist components

Adam, Christina and I guided our students' imaginations by introducing an excercise where they decomposed Poe's "Raven" (before the raven reveals itself) and rearranged the words to create their own poem. Haunting readings revealed at the exhibition! They also began sculpting what they imagined.

IMAGINE THE INTERIOR

In the classroom, our students began imagining what was on the interior of the building by responding to our fall residency graphics.

MEDIA: Christina Kral's components

Christina Kral http://christinakral.net/ a media artist from Germany continued her components of this collaboration by documenting our expedition into the abandoned building and being present for planning, teaching and brainstorming for our student's install in the project room.

EXPEDITION AND PHOTOS: Nathan Kensinger's components

As our fall residency was coming to a close, "The No Place" was coincidentally opening at BRIC Rotunda Gallery. Our students took a visit to the gallery to view this exhibition about exploring secret spaces and met contemporary photographer, Nathan Kensinger http://kensinger.blogspot.com/.
Nathan's work was exhibited in the show and he has collaborated on "This Building Has a Story" by leading an expedition into the building (adults only) and taking photos of the adventure. He has also presented his photos to our students so they could experience the actuality of the space.

VIRTUAL GRAFFITI POSTER: Brian Bell and Linn Edward's components

Linn Edward's http://www.linnedwards.com/ collaborated with...
Brian Bell, a Brooklyn artist and graphic designer http://www.lefthandedpublishing.com/ on the finishing touches for an 11 X 17 poster to be given to the students that created the painted graphics.

VIRTUAL GRAFFITI: Linn Edward's components

Linn Edwards http://www.linnedwards.com/ a Brooklyn photographer, shares our interest in the narratives that are present in our everyday surroundings. Linn made our vision a reality by taking a visit to the abandoned building and virtually installed the student's paintings into the windows (she is also a master of Photoshop!)
