SHRINES

An installation about the imagined and actual stories of an abandoned building in Brooklyn,NY. It is also about the art of observation and finding little treasures in everyday life. This is an in-school residency at Juan Morel Campos Secondary School with BRIC Contemporary Art Education, a program of BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn.
Nathan's presentation really changed the character of the building and the project as a whole for the class. Their entry point was sort of "Scooby Doo"-esque--they imagined a haunted spooky space--but the presentation made them think about the actual inhabitant, a real person who left odd and specific traces. This was a great way to lead into the shrine stage of the project. Their Poe poem cutups and drawings survive as echoes of those earlier, more innocent impressions alongside the fantastical and boldly specific shrine boxes, which show a much broader (and deeper) range of takes on the stories the building has to tell.
